1A.EXT.HAVELI BARAMDA – DAY – 2 SHIKH PRADHAN, 20 VILLAGERS
1958
We see a group of people have gathered in a veranda of an ancestral house, there is a person who might hold some authority sitting on the chair, rest of the crowd/villagers are sitting on floor, and everyone is listening to live commentary of 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games on a radio.

We hear the sound of war like bullets, machine guns, fighter planes and even tanks. We see a post war ceremony is going on and a high ranking Sikh army official standing on the podium is speaking.

We hear Punjabi songs very old and some 80’s and 90’s famous tracks, vintage car passing, OLD Gurudwara, OLD market, Ploughing farm ox, rice and wheat fields, sound of ardas in Gurudwara.

2. EXT. SUKHA HOUSE –(4 TO 5 AM) EARLY MORNING – SUKHA’S MOTHER, GANDHI, AMAN, GOLDI,CHAKRALA.
We open the scene with close ups of hockey sticks we follow some young boys entering a house, should feel like there’s going to be a fight.The boys go up and pads on the door hardly, Sukha’s Mother opens the door and Gandhi about to pad on sukha’s mother face by hockey stick.

Bas kar putt darvajja tod dega kya ?

Wo babbe ji Sukha ?

3. EXT. GURUDWARA – KITCHEN / BALCONY / HALL – (7 TO 8 AM/ SOURCE LIGHT) MORNING – SUKHA, MALE COOK, OTHER MIX CROWDS.
Morning ardas is going on We see some people cleaning the Gurdwara.
We see sukha (7) wearing a small turban helping a male cook, cooking dal. The male cook is instructing him.. He helps other people in Gurdwara in cleaning the floor and doing the dishes.

3A. INT. GURUDWARA HALL – MORNING – SUKHA, BABA JI, GANDHI, AMAN, GOLDI, CHAKRALA, OTHER MIX CROWDS
Sukha is sitting inside the Gurdwara’s hall and listening to ardas. The same boys come and say.
GANDHI
Aaj Khelne Kyun Nahin Aaya?
SUKHA
Mainu ni pata.
GANDHI
Wahh ji ni pata matlab tere karan game haar gaye hum, sab tere laye puch rahe si.
SUKHA
Mainu nahi pata kuj bhi, aaj to me sabere sabere roj gurudwaare aawanga chahe kuch bhi ho jaaye.
GANDHI
(Seriously) barish ho jaaye tab bhi ..?
SUKHA
Ha
CHAKRALA
Barf gir jaaye tab bhi..?
SUKHA
Chup kar yaar....
We close the scene with Sukha and his friend sitting in the Gurdwara’s hall.

4. EXT. SUKHA’S SCHOOL (SEPTEMBER) – DAY – SUKHA, GANDHI, MAJINDER, TEACHERS, STUDENTS, GOONS
Title Card - 2000
We see a school assembly is going on and Sukha and his friends are standing in the assembly.
Sukha now 11 has grown up a bit, but still very skinny, he is not wearing a turban anymore.
We see some localized hooligans comes and barge inside the school, grabs a girl by hair and takes her away.
No one is stopping them, Sukha runs and tries to free the girl, but a hooligan slaps him and he falls on the ground.
We stay on Sukha, as he watches the girl being dragged away and no one does anything.
The Girl is also looking at Sukha innocently while being dragged away in car.
Sukha’s friends comes running in while shouting his name.

5. INT / EXT. SUKHA’S HOUSE/ – MORNING DAY – SUKHA, GANDHI, AMAN, GOLDI, CHAKRALA OTHER FRIENDS
Next Day
We open the scene at sukha’s house, we see his mother comes with a cup of tea, she gives the tea to sukha,s father who is sitting on charpai outside in baramda.

Sukkha school chala gaya kya ?
SUKHA’S MOM
Nahi ji.. pata nhi aaj sukhe nu kya ho gaya, abhi tak soya hua hi hai..
SUKHA’S DAD
Koi gal nahi aaj aaram karne do, vaise bhi pure din bhag daud karte rehnda hai.
Sukha’s mother gets back to her work, she starts drying clothes on the wire. We see Sukkha’s friends arrive at his home on bicycle.
GANDHI
Sastriyakal antyji..
SUKHA’S MOM
Jeeta reh puttar..
GANDHI
Aunty sukha kaha hai?
SUKHA’S MOM
Vo upar so raha hai.
GANDHI
Thik hai..
Sukha’s friends go upstair, we see that sukha is lying on charpai thiking about yestartday what happened in school, seems to be little upset.
GANDHI
Ki gall sukhe tu tayyar ni hoya?
SUKHA
Man nahi hai mera school jaan da
CHAKRALA
Man to mera bhi nahi hai yaar
SUKHA
Tenu ki fark penda ghar vich bappuji di maar khani hai aur school vich teacher di. school ja naja same hi he
(All laugh)
GANDHI
Ab to mera bhi man nahi hai.. aaj kuch aur karte hai na
SUKHA
Kuch aur ki ?
GANDHI
Wo apne pind te bahar film hall hai na Film dekhne jaate hai
FRIENDS
Ha ha film dekhne chalte hai
SUKHA
Ha wo theatre towade pio da hai na, khotiyo waha jaan lye paise di lod hondi hai… hai paise thohde khol?
GANDHI
Paise to nahi hai ek idea hai

5A. EXT. MOVIE THEATRE CHECK IN– DAY – SUKHA, GANDHI, AMAN, GOLDI,CHAKRALA TICKET CHECKER, GUARDS, OTHERS
We see Sukha and his friends are outside the movie theatre, they are wating in the Q to enter the theatre thinking about how will the sneak in. its Gandhi’s turn now. Gandhi witout showing his ticket starts to run towards the theatre entrance the ticket checker starts chasing him. After running a bit Gandhi stops.
TICKET CHECKER
Oye oye khote de putter kitho bhag raha hai ruk rukkk..
Ticket dikha apna. (Then Gandhi shows his ticket)
GANDHI
Paaji tussi khoti kishnu bolya tussi mainu nahi jande ho
TICKET CHECKER
O hai kon tu
GANDHI
Wo chaddo tonhu pata hai aaj sbere sabere maine ki kita??
Mean time we see other friends sneak inside the theatre from behind the ticket checker without getting noticed.
TICKET CHECKER
Ki kita tu bai sabere sabere
GANDHI
Nasta kita paaji.. aur ki kar sagda me??
Ticket checker confused Gandhi runs away.

5B. INT. MOVIE THEATRE OLD TYPE – DAY – SUKHA, GANDHI, CHAKRALA, FRIENDS, OTHER CROWD.
We see it’s a very old theatre which is full of cheap crowd, sukha and friends go inside the theatre and go to the dress circle and quietly sits on the floor,
Movie starts, as Sanjay Dutt comes on screen it grabs Sukha’s attention and sukha watches the whole movie without blinking his eyes. Sukha completely gets into the movie.

6. INT. SUKHA’S HOUSE / ROOM – DAY - SUKHA
Sukha has bought the audio cassette of Khalnayak, the movie he saw in theatre.
He is wearing a vest and small shorts; he puts on the cassette and starts imitating Sanjay Dutt on the movie track.
“Nayak Nahin Khal nayak hoon main...” which is being played.

6A. EXT SUKHA’S HOUSE / HALL / DOWNSTAIRS – SONU, SUKHA’S MOTHER, DAY-VILLAGERS,
Sukha’s mother’s comes in starts preparing pickle
SUKHA’S MOTHER
Haye rabba ki ho gaya iss munde nu, phir shuru ho gaya.
Sonu, Sukha’s brother is doing workout. He hides his packet of cigarette which falls from his pocket during the work out from his mother.
SONU
Babbe ek hafte se 50 baar yehi gana sun raha hai, muje lagta hai ab agra bhejne ka time aa gaya.
Now we come to know that a week has been past but the impact of the movie and Sanjay Dutt is still in Sukha’s mind.
SUKHA’S MOM
Agra kyu ? kya hai waha ?
SONU
Pagal khana. (laughs)
SUKHA’S MOM
Chup kar.. aisa bolte hai chote bhai k baare me??
Meanwhile we see a fight between families,is going on, rest of the people in colony are not even bothered by it, seems like the usual sight for them. Kids are casually playing cricket, women are talking, cutting vegetables, making butter. Old people drinking tea, chatting.

6B. INT/EXT. SUKHA’S HOUSE / ROOM/Balcony – DAY - SUKHA, SUKHA’S MOTHER, VILLAGERS, POLICE CONSTABLES, KIDS, OTHERS
Sukha’s mother goes to sukha’s room, opens the door. She sees Sukha has made a gun out of the towel and is pretending like he is a gangster. Sukha’s mother in anger comes and stops the song and takes the towel out of his hand.
SUKHA
(In sanjay dutt style)
band kyu kiya re tune maaa.
Sukha’s mother comes to him in anger and slpas him hard and she takes Sukha to the balcony and show him the villagers fighting and the constable taking one of the villagers to their van to police station)
SUKHA’S MOTHER
Dekh.. dekh .. tu chata hai tere sath bhi aisa hi ho? Tuje bhi police wale aise hi utha ke le jaye?
SUKHA
(with numb eyes nods)
Nahi.
SUKHA’S MOTHER
Teri harkate aisi hi rahi to ye din bhi door nahi.
(Sukha’s mother sees that sukha gets nervous and scared, so she takes him inside and makes him sit on the bed viping his tears.)
SUKHA’S Mother
Dekh beta, tuje pata hai na baba ji humari icha puri karte hai isiliye tu roz subah gurudwara jata hai na ?
SUKHA
Ha maa
SUKHA’S MOM
To tu ye sab kyu kar raha hai? Agar tu ye sab karega to tu bhi ek din gangster ban jayega.. bol tu gagnster banna chata hai ?
SUKHA
Nahi maa.
SUKHA’S MOM
(in a very motherly way)
Amrica jaa k bada aadmi kaun banega ?
SUKHA
(still tears in his eyes but smiling)

(sukha makes a hand gesture of a palne taking off)

We pan and end the scene on audio cassette of Khalnayak.

7 .EXT. STOCK SHOTS - DAY

We hear a strange, trance kind of track in the background.
We are looking at the aerial shots of Kahlon village.

7A. EXT. KABADDI FEILD – DAY (RAIN) – SUKHA, SUKHA’S FRIENDS, OPPONENTS, and OTHER 50 MIX CROWDS
We are in the sky, still hawk eye and rain begins to drop and we (camera) begin to follow a raindrop, its going down, down and down and the speed of the drop increases and we see its going towards a small ground, where a crowd is gathered and a Kabaddi match is going on, it's still aerial and little blurry, kind of a sepia, the drop falls near the foot of the player and then we see in fury the player holds an opponent hard and he is not letting him go,
The player is about to get choked, he gives up and the other team wins, we see player of the winning team stands, still, firm. He is Sukha, now 15, strong, little taller, he still has a childish charm on his face, but he is strong as a Punjabi should be. He stands firm and smiling, while the opponent team is literally abusing him.
There is no sound in the scene, apart from the rain and now for the first time we hear a sound of the girl.
GIRL
Sukha, Sukha, Sukha, Sukha, Sukha...
Sukha doesn’t really bother coz he actually can’t hear the girl coz everyone else is also shouting Sukha.

7B. EXT. ROUGH ROAD – (RAINY) DAY – SUKHA, SUKHA’S FRIENDS
The same trance music is being played in the background, Sukha and his friends on motorbike, going towards the village, with the trophy, everyone is happy. Unaware of what is going to happen.

7C.INT. SUKHA’S HOUSE – (RAINY) DAY – SUKHA’S MOTHER, SUKHA’S FATHER
We see Sukha’s parents, really happy and relaxed, watching a show Kareena Kareena on TV on Zee T.V. unaware of what is going to happen, that there life will change forever.

7D.INT. AIR PORT/PLAIN – (RAINY) DAY – SONU, OTHER PASSENGERS, FAMILIES, STAFFS
We see Sukha’s brother in the plane; he is sitting in the economy class and is relaxed. Unaware of what is going to happen.
CUT TO.
7E. EXT. ROAD / STREET – (RAINY) DAY - SUKHA, 15 MIX HOOLIGANS, 4 JRS POLICE
We see Sukha travelling with his friends, it’s still raining. Sukha and his friends apart as sukha takes a different road from there to reach his home. As soon as he takes a different road some cars and bikes come and stops his way, boys come out, with hockey sticks, cricket bats and even baseball bats. A fight infused, all this is slightly in slow-mo, we see Sukha heavily hit, bleeding from nose and head, is being taken away, literally dragged by the police.

8. EXT. ROUGH ROAD – (AFTER RAIN) NIGHT - SUKHA’S FRIENDS, SUKHA’S FATHER
We slowly fade in the background we listen to the track Shikra Yaar by Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Jagjit Singh’s version. The track will play slowly throughout the scene.
We see some bikes going somewhere, we are following them.

8A.EXT. /INT. - POLICE STATION – DAY - SUKHA, 15-20 OTHER CRIMINALS, CONSTABLES
We see an old Sikh while smoking hashish, is listening to this track on radio and humming to it also.
This is kind of a big lock up, not a separate lock up, where lots of convicts, accused and criminals are held and some cops are also sleeping there.
We see Sukha is sitting in the corner, he is badly beaten, and he is sitting bleeding from head and nose. Except Sukha everyone is either smoking, drinking and even injecting themselves. Sukha in the corner silently observing everything.

9. EXT. /INT. SUKHA’S HOUSE – MORNING - SUKHA, SUKHA’S MOM,SUKHA’S DAD
It’s early morning Sukha’s father and Mother brings Sukha home, he is badly beaten, unable to walk properly, he lies down on his bed
SUKHA’S DAD
Ab tu aram kar pauttar chinta di koi gall nahi hai,
Both mother and father goes outside and close the door. Mother begins to cry.
SUKHA’S DAD
(to mother)
Ab tenu key hoya, sahi salamat ghar aa to gaya hai puttar tera….
Tu chinta naa kar yaar sab thik kar diya hai maine,
SUKHA’S MOM
kya thik kar diya hai ek baar jiska naam police mai chala jaaye police wale baar baar usse pakad kar thaane le jaate hain..(rote huy)kitni maar lagai hai kamino ne mere puttar ko
SUKHA’S DAD
ab aisa kuch nahi hoga, poore 25000 diye hain mene police walon ko,
Sukha is listening to everything from inside while silently lying on his bed.

10. EXT. STOCK SHOTS– MARKET/MALLS/ VILLAGE / NIGHT CLUB - DAY

We see life of Punjab has changed, we see fashionable clothes, sports bikes, sports cars, early smart phones, night-clubs.big cars, Then we see guns supply, gangsters exchanging.
(After this fast paced montage, the pace, look and feel of the movie will change, for a while we will focus on Sukha's romantic life,

11. EXT. COLLEGE / CORRIDOR – DAY - LOVELY, JODHA, CHAKRALA, PREMA, PROFFSOR, 40 STUDENTS
We follow lovely who is furiously running in the college corridor, he reaches near the class room where a class is going on.
LOVELY
Sukha bhai
Gandhi, jodha, prema gets up and go towards him, but Sukha doesn’t get up. Sukha is watching as lovely is telling other three, about what has happened, we can see he is badly beaten. All four leaves, but Sukha doesn’t. Sukha tells teacher.
SUKHA
Please continue SIR.

12. EXT. MAJINDER’S COLLEGE – DAY - SUKHA, lovely, PREMA, MAJINDER, SUKHA’S FRIENDS, OTHERS
Sukha reaches Majinder’s college where the fight is going on. Sukha barges in and stops the fight and says
SUKHA
Wo bas kar yaar bahut maar dita ab
LOVELY
Bhai mainu chadd de sala janda nahi mujhe, bai chadd mainnu isnu idhar gaad dunga.
SUKHA
Oye chup kar bahut maar liya bola na, aur mujhe achche se pata hai tune kya kiya hai to ab bas ..
Sukha turns, suddenly Majinder was coming and both bumps into each other, her iphone3 falls down, Sukha picks up the cell phone and gives to her and leaves, Majinder smiles, Sukha doesn’t respond and leaves.

13. EXT.GARDEN– DAY - SUKHA, MAJINDER, HONEY SINGH, OTHERS
(The following is the montage of Sukha and Majinder, both look but doesn’t speak to each other. If possible use this track to give a different edge to this love montage. Ray LA Montagne’s Without Words from the Album Fault In Our Stars or Hero by Enrique Iglesias from the Album Escape)
We see a rock concert is going on probably Honey Singh or Babbu Mann, everyone is enjoying, it’s winter, we see majinder in groove enjoying, she sees Sukha and then go towards him, between the heavy crowd majinder goes and stands near sukha and begins to enjoy. Sukha see her and smile, but after a moment Sukha leaves. Majinder finds it bit odd.

13A.EXT. – ROAD – DAY - SUKHA, MAJINDER, HANDICAPPED PERSON, OTHER
Majinder going somewhere in the car and see Sukha at the side of the road, helping a handicapped boy getting into wheelchair, manjinder clicks a picture from her cell phone.
CUT TO.
13B.EXT.GARDEN– NIGHT - SUKHA, MAJINDER, OTHERS
During winter, we see Majinder is sitting alone, outside and listening to music, Sukha is silently observing/looking at her, it's night time, some boys are about to approach Majinder, but they see Sukha, Sukha’s tells them not to approach her and he keeps looking at Majinder, silently from far.

13C.EXT. BASAKETBALL COURT – DAY - SUKHA, MAJINDER, SUKHA’S FRIENDS, OTHERS
In basketball court, people are doing stunts with bike and so is Sukha, suddenly Sukha sees Majinder and loses his balance and falls down and hurts himself badly.

13D.EXT. HOSPITAL – DAY - SUKHA, MAJINDER, MAJINDER’S FRIENDS, SUKHA’S FRIENDS, OTHERS
We see Sukha in the hospital his friends are taking care of him, Majinder comes, doesn’t say a word, gives him a card and one white rose, writes something on his plastered leg. All the friends and Sukha, watching this drama and then Majinder just leaves.

13E. EXT. LAKE/CANAL SIDE – DAY evening- SUKHA, MAJINDER, SUKHA’S FRIENDS, OTHERS
It's the end of Montage; Majinder is standing alone near a LAKE/CANAL. Sukha goes towards her and they both speak for the first time.

14. INT. GYM – DAY EVENING - HEAVY BUILT MAN, 15 OTHERS BUILT,
We hear the sound of boxing gloves hitting sand/punching bag hardly as possible.
We see two fists, wearing gloves hitting the bag.
We see a heavy built guy hitting the bag hardly, someone comes from behind and shows him something on phone.
We see his close up in anger.
CUT TO.
15. EXT. LAKE/CANAL SIDE - DAY EVENING /SUKHA, MAJINDER, HEAVY BUILT GUY, HIS 8 BUILT FRIENDS.
We see Sukha and Majinder, sitting on a bench near a LAKE/CANAL.
They both sit silently for sometime just enjoying the moment, after sometime majinder speaks.
MAJINDER
Tumhen pata hai main tumhe kab se chahti hun?
SUKHA
Kab se?
MAJINDER
Jab tumhe Peheli baar dekha tha
SUKHA
College mei?
MAJINDER
Nahi! School mei
SUKHA
School me kab?
MAJINDER
Yaad karo, Government Elementary school, assemble me kuch gunde ek ladki ko zabardasti utha ke le gaye the.
(Sukha smiles and says)
SUKHA
Haan haan to wo tumm thi?
MAJINDER
yes wo main thi, (look exchange) main wo din kabhi nahi bhul sakti sukha, kitne log the waha school me , par tumhare alawa koi nahi aya mujhe bachane.
SUKHA
Mujhe bhi wo din achhe se yaad hai, tum kitnni dari huwi thi,
MAJINDER
Achcha ji me nahi darti kisi se bhi haaaaaa…
SUKHA
( smiling )jindagi bhi kaise kaise mod leti hai, ekdum hairaan kaar deti hai, hum aaj ekdusre ko itna like karte hain, jabki mujhe ye bhi nhi malum ki hum school mei eksath padhte the..
Sukha stands and begins to walk towards the LAKE/CANAL while talking
Both Majinder and Sukha are unaware that behind them a car has stopped and some boys have come, suddenly a boy hits Sukha with a baseball bat on his right leg, Sukha falls, then we see a heavy built man comes out of the car, other two boys hold Sukha and that heavy built guy beats Sukha badly.
We see Sukha lying on the road and watching the car going away, kind of a repetition of the school scene.

15A. EXT. LAKE/CANAL SIDE – NIGHT– SUKHA, VICKY GROUNDER
Late night we see a young boy passes by see Sukha lying on the road.

16. INT. HOSPITAL – NEXT DAY MORNING - SUKHA, VICKY GROUNDER, JODHA,GANDHI,LOVELY,PREMA
We hear the sound of morning Ardas.
Sukha injured sitting in the hospital, he is awake and very angry and tensed.
His friends come running in and stands beside him, he can see that all of his friends are angry.

(The following shot of sukha & his friends will be taken in slow-mo & very stylised manner with a particular background music for reference- background music of movie 300 to establish their gang)
We see all 6 of them goes into Gurdwara, all 6 of them Kneels before Granth Sahib, takes blessings from Priest.

16B.INT. GYM – NIGHT - SUKHA, VICKY GROUNDER, JODHA, GANDHI, LOVELY, PREMA, HEAVY BUILT MAN & HIS GANG, OTHERS.
Sukha and his friends opens the gym door and see, there are about 15 boys working out.
The boy who beat Sukha sees them, he is practicing boxing as usual. He starts walking towards them, while removing his gloves, the 14 boys also join him.
We now see both parties standing face to face, its 6 vs.14.
Sukha steps ahead and so does the other guy and Sukha shouts and push him and the fight infuses.

After the fight/ TIME LAPSE
Only Sukha is standing properly and everyone is on the floor, the guy who beat Sukha is badly injured, bleeding and almost unconscious, even Sukha’s friends are unconscious, but we see Grounder, getting up. Both Sukha and Grounder smiles at each other.
While Grounder and Sukha is smiling, for the first time in the film, we hear Sukha’s narration.

Next shot still beaten up, but everyone is having breakfast with Sukha’s mom, dad and Majinder is also there, standing looking at Sukha.

Me sab ko bol diya tha Vicky mera bhai hai aaj se mere sath hi rahega mere ghar me mere dil me par mujhe ye nahi pata tha ki ye hi bhai ek din meri jaan ka dushman ban jayega
We see Sukha and Grounder posing for a photo like a long lost brothers and Gandhi is clicking their photo with a mobile camera. They are still badly injured.

We see in a farm on a chaarpai Sukha and his friends and some new group members are sitting and having food, they are enjoying the moment. We normally pan among the group while Sukha says everyone’s name.

We see a truck driver is looking in the truck side rear view mirror. He is amazed that a bike is coming, on its own and there is no rider, truck driver while driving watches the bike, till bike falls down. He stops the truck and while all this is happening Sukha comes and sits next to him and puts the gun on his head, while his gang members robs the truck.

We see Sukha is roaming alone at night, he seems little frustrated and Sad. He is then roaming on the highway alone.

We see Majinder who was searching for Sukha whole night found Sukha sitting on the side of the LAKE/CANAL.
Majinder comes and sits with Sukha, for a while both doesn’t say anything.
